In honour of African Heritage Month, we’ve been sharing stories by Black authors that celebrate the significance of food in culture, particularly starting at a young age. We hope you’ve enjoyed this series!
This is an adorable story that’s sure to put a smile on your face and a little rumble in your tummy.
Set in a bustling southwest Nigerian market, Mama takes Baby along while she shops for all the delicious fruits & vegetables from the colourful array of stalls.
When Baby and Mama go to the market, Baby is so adorable that the banana seller gives him six bananas. Baby eats one and puts five in the basket, but Mama doesn’t notice. As Mama and Baby wind their way through the stalls, cheeky Baby collects five oranges, four biscuits, three ears of sweet corn, two pieces of coconut . . . until Mama notices that her basket is getting very heavy! Poor Baby, she thinks, he must be very hungry by now!
