Just like last year, we’ve rounded up three books for 2024 that are sure to put a smile on faces, spark learning and inspire a love of real food. In fact, we enjoyed these three so much we’re gifting them to our centre partners this year for the holidays. They also share a common theme: exploring the connection between science & food, showing kids how whole foods grow, thrive, or transform into something new & tasty. Get ready for a literary treat!
Pickle Words, by April Pulley Sayre, illustrated by Jialei Sun
Time to “relish” the holidays! We love this vibrant poetry book that takes kids on a journey into the world of international pickling traditions. From dills, to chutney, to kimchi, it teaches little ones the perfect adjectives for these flavourful goodies & celebrates the art of preserving. Some kids may even be inspired to start writing their own poetry. Prepare to be “in a pickle” in the best way possible!
Hello World! How do Apples Grow?, by Jill MacDonald
Science meets food in this captivating book all about apples! The Hello World! series introduces young minds to non-fiction concepts, often exploring how plants grow into the delicious & nutritious whole foods we love. With cheerful illustrations & simple explanations of each apple’s journey—from seed to tree to snack—this book highlights the essentials apples need to grow big and strong: fresh air, water, and sunlight. It’s sure to plant the seeds of curiosity and may even inspire some future green thumbs!
Zac et Zazou Vont Aux Pommes, by Lucie Papineau & Julie Cossette
Zac and Zazou are off to pick apples with their favourite cousin, turning an ordinary outing into an unforgettable day. This charming French-language picture book is full of playful moments as the trio explores the orchard. With vibrant illustrations and a heartwarming story, it’s a delightful way to celebrate the fun of family time and the wonders of apple picking.
