When we say we go the extra mile to bring thoughtfully sourced food to the kids we serve—we mean it. That’s why we’re proud to shine a spotlight on one of our local partners we’ve been working with for over a decade: Barrie’s Asparagus, a family-owned farm nestled near Cambridge, Ontario, and home to some of the most beloved crackers on our menu.

Yes, you read that right: your child’s favourite crackers—the ones they keep asking for, and the ones we often get emails about from curious parents—come from an asparagus farmer.
While Tim Barrie is well-known in his community for growing some of Ontario’s best asparagus, that’s not all he brings to the table. At RFRK, we source his Cracked Wheat Crackers and Pita Crackers, and they’ve quickly become kid favourites. In fact, he told us parents have gone straight to the farm to pick up a case of crackers after their kids raved about them—because they’re not easy to find in Toronto!

more than just a supplier—a true partner
Recently, a few members of our team took a trip out to visit Tim at the farm, and it only deepened our appreciation for what he does. We’re always looking to work with businesses who share our values—local, transparent, community-driven, and forward-thinking—and Barrie’s Asparagus checks every box. By visiting in person, we were able to see firsthand how much care goes into not just the products, but the partnerships that make them possible.
Tim’s commitment to sustainability, quality and innovation is something we truly admire. But what really stood out was the heart behind the operation—it’s a true family affair. The market shop, where families pick up asparagus, crackers, local produce and other delicious farm-made products, is located in the same house Tim grew up in. That history, heart, and connection to place shines through in everything the Barrie family does.
from asparagus to artisanal crackers—and coffee!
Tim’s kids are involved in the business in meaningful ways, helping grow and expand its reach. One especially cool example? The coffee our staff enjoys at the RFRK office is roasted right on the farm—thanks to a coffee business started by Tim’s son, Blacksmith & Bean. Now that’s what we call keeping it in the family! So as a family-founded, owned and operated business ourselves, this parallel means a lot to us.

Working with producers like Barrie’s Asparagus isn’t just about great ingredients—it’s about building relationships with people who share our belief that food can (and should) bring joy, connection, and care into kids’ lives — and demonstrates our long standing commitment to local food and partnerships. So the next time your little one crunches into a Cracked Wheat Cracker, just know: it’s more than a snack. It’s a bite of something local, lovingly made, and full of flavour in every sense of the word.
