sundays are for feasts

sundays are for feasts 1

Sundays are for Feasts, written by Leila Boukarim & illustrated by Ruaida Mannaa, tells the tale of Yasmine, who is on a trip to visit loved ones in Lebanon. One Sunday, she’s handed a monumental mission: making the hummus for her family’s weekly feast! She’s a little nervous, because everyone knows how much her Ammo Farouk—the family’s hummus hero with a warm heart but a serious love for flavour—cares about getting it just right. Will her creation win over his taste buds?

We love this book for its radiant illustrations that showcase the beauty of simple, wholesome ingredients (from a smiling chickpea to bright, juicy lemons) and how it celebrates gathering, cooking, and sharing in perfect harmony. With the holidays just around the corner, it’s a reminder that memories made around the table are a big part of what makes this time of year so special.

What makes this story especially heartwarming is the way it celebrates kids’ determination to carry on the traditions their parents, grandparents, and families hold dear. At the same time, it gently reminds readers that it’s perfectly okay to add your own twist, because every cook has their own unique, special flair.

At the back, you’ll find a simple, kid-friendly hummus recipe. Perfect for little chefs to make alongside a parent or guardian!

Sundays are for Feasts was published in Toronto, Canada by Groundwood Books.
