Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd—-a perfect time to celebrate our connection to the environment through reading & learning. We think sharing these two kids books promotes food literacy (understanding food origins, nutrition and sustainability), may inspire budding green thumbs in kids, and spark a deeper love & appreciation for our planet.
Compost Stew: An A to Z Recipe for the Earth written by Mary McKenna Siddals and illustrated by Ashley Wolff is perfect for kids a little older, inspiring them to start composting one day. Told in a clever way where kids become “chefs” whipping up a batch of compost stew, each page pairs a detailed, vibrant illustration with a letter of the alphabet, showing what belongs—and what doesn’t—in a heaping pot of compost stew. The illustrations themselves are created using upcycled materials, adding another earth-friendly touch to the book. A helpful Chef’s Note at the end highlights how composting, like cooking, can be about creativity & improvisation. And with the catchy mantra “Earthy? Yes! Meaty? No! Synthetic? Stop! Natural? Go!” kids will be set up for composting success.
Hello World! Garden Time written & illustrated by Jill McDonald is for the earth’s littlest learners. Part of the Hello, World! series, this fact-filled board book sparks curiosity and helps toddlers explore the world around them. Garden Time is a fun, easy-to-follow read that shows tiny gardeners how plants grow—whether it’s a big neighbourhood garden or a small one at home! From earthworms to watering cans, the simple text and bright illustrations makes for a memorable learning experience. It also teaches kids that every seed & plant has its own rhythm. Plus, they’ll totally love learning about the farm-to-fork magic behind their favourite fruit & veggies.
Every Earth Day the RFRK team rolls up our sleeves for a neighbourhood cleanup and serves up a meal that’s kind to the planet and reduces our carbon footprint—our plant-based Tomato Spinach Frijoles. We also work with local & Canadian suppliers throughout the year to ensure the freshness & sustainability of our ingredients, including sourcing our chicken, beef & turkey from Ontario farms that prioritize sustainability & regenerative practices.
