Gong Bao — wow!
When one of our dear child care partners asked us for more Chinese-inspired flavours, we couldn’t wait to bring our Gong Bao Chicken recipe to life—and now, you can too. We love serving it to celebrate Lunar New Year, but this Asian-influenced meal is delicious any time or for any occasion!
We like to use Ontario-raised chicken brought up without routine antibiotics or hormones, tamari (a gluten-free soy sauce alternative), red bell peppers for natural sweetness, ginger & garlic for a gentle zing, and a few more seasonings to round out the bold flavours. It’s got a mild kick and just enough zip to open up a whole new world of flavour for the whole family!
This recipe also introduces you to a chef-y technique called ‘velveting’, a classic Chinese culinary method used to make chicken (or other meats) more tender and silky. Shhhh… It’s one of the secrets to making homemade versions taste restaurant-quality.
Here’s a fun fact: “Gong Bao” originally refers to a title meaning “palace guardian,” a nod to the Qing Dynasty official the meal is named after. But we won’t be guarding the recipe, we’re passing it on to you!
