Bread Days, written & illustrated by Hannah Chung, is a celebration of the joys of baking and the cherished family moments that go along with it. Through Nara’s special sourdough-making rituals with her Papa, this touching story reminds us how nurturing food traditions can keep us connected to the people we love.
Nara’s favourite days are spent in the kitchen with Papa: feeding their sourdough starter, kneading dough and watching their loaves rise to golden perfection. Their weekly baking ritual is filled with little details that make it special, like the flour-dusted counters and the excitement of sharing a freshly baked loaf.
But when Papa is no longer there, the beloved bread days suddenly feel different. As she navigates the loss, she discovers that returning to the treasured tradition with her Mama can bring comfort & help keep precious memories alive, all while forming new ones. It’s a tender & hopeful message: love can live on in the little things we do together, and many of those little things involve creating & sharing delicious food.
With November’s chilly days calling for cozy kitchen activities, it’s the perfect time to rise to the occasion 😉 with this lovely read. We hope it inspires some family baking adventures of your own.

fun facts about sourdough
- A sourdough starter is part delicious baking magic & part science project! It is a lively little community that starts with only flour & water but eventually captures natural yeasts & bacteria for a slow rise.
- Sourdough’s slow fermentation process helps break down some of the phytates in flour, which may make minerals like iron & zinc easier for the body to absorb.
- Sourdough may have a longer shelf life than other breads. This is also thanks to the fermentation process!
