RFRK turns 20: recipes we outgrew

  • May 30, 2024

One of the things that sets RFRK apart has been our exploration of flavours and textures from around the world. Looking back on our 20 years of service, we see the journey our menu has taken, and fondly remember some of the recipes we outgrew from our earlier days.

Even though those dishes were great, we’ve made room to continue experimenting and improving our offerings to bring a variety of real food to the diverse community of kids we serve.

New England Chowdah

Fish can be a tough ingredient for kids, but this hearty soup made it approachable & delicious. Plus, it’s as fun to say as it is to slurp!

Pumpkin Roti

This plant-based meal included a yummy homemade masala & pumpkin blend, all wrapped up in a hand held package for easy eating. A perfect way for kids to dive into new tastes!

Tang Ku Chicken

tong fu sweet and sour chicken dish served with rice and broccoli
This Asian-inspired, sweet & sour dish brought variety to our menu! Since then, we’ve continued to expand our offerings of mouthwatering globally-inspired meals.

Zucchini Noodles & Tofu Bolognese

tofu bolognese, zucchini noodles, buttered bread on white and green plate
The satisfying swirl of a noodle but with the goodness of zucchini? Yes, please! This vegan-friendly meal was both creative & comforting.

Banana Oatmeal Mookie

What’s a mookie? It’s a delicious hybrid of muffin & cookie, of course. We love snacks that proudly feature fruits & veggies, and this was just one of many!

Swedish Meatballs

retired swedish meatball dish from RFRK served with pasta and broccoli
These bite-sized balls packed the flavourful punch of Scandinavia and were a great source of protein. We like to think ours were better than the ones from a certain furniture store!

Below are a few more recipes & snacks we gave a shot, but not everything turns out to be a home run. We take feedback from partners and the kids they serve to continually improve or develop new recipes everyone can get excited about.

Curried Tuna Salad

a bowl of curried tuna salad in a red and white ramekin
We worked hard to make this flavourful & refreshing cold tuna dish for summer, but turns out the kids prefer our other fish recipes!

Watermelon Radish

We love introducing exciting fruits & veggies to our menus! While these watermelon radishes look super cool & taste milder than a standard radish, they were just a tad too spicy for the little ones’ palates.

Lentil Shepherd’s Pie

new lentil shepherd's pie topped with a sweet potato mash
This tasty meal was shaping up to be a winter hit, but serving it to the kids was a little challenging and they weren’t the biggest fans. Luckily, they love our other lentil-based recipes!

Do you remember any of these dishes? Is there one you think we should bring back?
