Many restaurateurs, Chefs, caterers and retail stores use the term ‘local’ to describe food grown nearby. But how far from farm to kitchen does food have to travel to be considered local?
The food landscape has changed in the past 50 years, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) definition of what ‘locally grown’ means remains bewilderingly outdated. In the summer of 2013, Real Food for Real Kids found itself caught up in this web of confusion but took the opportunity to influence a positive change in Federal Policy.
