more than just a new recipe

Our NEW Three Sisters Soup brings together beans, squash & corn, three crops with roots in Indigenous agricultural traditions. Historically planted together, they help one another grow & thrive in the garden, making them a delicious dream team.
We created this recipe in collaboration with Eshkiniigjik Naandwechigegamig, or ENAGB, an organization supporting Indigenous youth & community. We sourced all three staple ingredients from Canadian growers, and tried six different recipe iterations to ensure the soup taste just right and stayed true to its cultural significance.
Who are the Three Sisters?
The Three Sisters represent more than three crops grown together. Each plant plays an important role in supporting the others.
Corn grows tall & strong, allowing for the beans to climb towards the sunshine and keep the soil healthy, while squash grows along the ground, using her big leaves to protect the soil beneath them. Together, the three plants demonstrate the importance of cooperation, balance & community.
“They are called sisters because they grow together and help each other, just like a family or a group of friends.“

We developed this recipe to bring more Indigenous representation to our menu and to give kids an opportunity to learn about Indigenous food traditions. Working with ENAGB gave us the opportunity to approach that goal through collaboration. Kind of like how the Three Sisters work together in the garden, we brought our teams together in the kitchen to grow an idea into a recipe. ❤️
