the great gathering place kids book cover art

The Great Gathering Place by Naomi McIlwraith and illustrated by Onedove, invites kids & their families on a paddling adventure in a big red canoe towards something special: a place where people come together to show gratitude towards the Earth and enjoy a feast.

Indigenous cultures have long emphasized respect for our surroundings and everything the Earth provides, including the food that nourishes us. During the story, readers are introduced to a beautiful way of seeing the world, one where Sky, Buffalo, River, Antelope, Moose and Sturgeon are honoured as relatives.

With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, The Great Gathering Place is a wonderful way to introduce children to Indigenous stories and perspectives. Through its celebration of community & connection to the natural world, it reminds us that there is always more to learn.

Naomi McIlwraith is a Métis educator, poet and essayist based in Edmonton, while Onedove is a Cree and Métis illustrator and designer based in Vancouver.

The story is written in both English & Cree, and features a Cree pronunciation guide & glossary.
