our ancestors’ kitchen

  • July 30, 2025

Our Ancestors’ Kitchen, written by Willie Poll and illustrated by Shaikara David is a Canadian kids book, published by Annick Press in Toronto. It’s a beautiful, poetic story that honours traditional Indigenous harvesting. Join a young girl as she learns to make her grandfather’s favourite recipe alongside her grandmother, with each step bringing back memories of collecting ingredients & giving thanks.

We love this book for its gentle tone and the way it helps young readers slow down and soak in the beauty around them. From summer berry picking to setting a plate for ancestors, every page is a reminder that food isn’t just something we eat. It’s also about thoughtful traditions, staying connected to the land and showing quiet & peaceful appreciation for those who came before us & inspired the foods we love now.

Bright illustrations and a delicious recipe for Nuwish—also known as soapberry ice cream, made from small, bright red berries native to parts of western and northern Canada—add a special ode-to-summer touch, even though all the seasons are beautifully represented. Of course, it also gives little ones & families the opportunity to learn about new ingredients and whip up something fun in the kitchen. Always a plus!

All in all, the story holds space for celebration, connection, and deep respect for Mother Earth.
